 Wainwright District Museum

On your next visit to…

…Wainwright be sure to spend an afternoon at the Wainwright District Museum which is housed in the lovingly restored Canadian National Railways Station at the south end of Main Street. The museum is operated by the Battle River Historical Society and is a member of Museums Alberta.  It is staffed by a volunteer corp of knowledgeable and enthusiastic local history buffs.

Founded in 1973, the B. R. H. S. set to work collecting historical artefacts significant to the area. Their first museum was housed in the old AGT building until relocating in 1989 into the decommissioned station house.

Proudly featured are a wide range of historical items including pioneer farming & ranching artefacts, a full display of items and stories on the buffalo park, the oil and gas industry, the prisoner of war camp, radio and telephone in addition to the many exhibits on early prairie and town life.  Here too, you will find a huge collection of souvenir spoons from all over the world.

The Memorial Clock Tower

Lest We Forget

At the center of town stands the Memorial Clock Tower.  Its distinctive form makes it the only freestanding war monument of its kind in Canada.

The clock tower was commissioned by the Walter Musson Chapter I.O.D.E. as a memorial to those brave souls who perished in W.W. I, and later W.W. II. Locally, sixty-nine people went to war and did not return.  They are remembered with inscriptions on the south-facing two plaques of the memorial.
